Privacy Policy

📷What happens to your photos

Judging: when you take a photo for a daily riddle, a Kwest catch, a Themed Hunt round, a contest, Bingo, or Tic Tac Toe, it's held in memory, sent over an encrypted connection to our scoring service, judged, and then dropped. The copy used for judging is never saved and never written to our logs.

What we do keep, by default: some photos are also saved to Google Firebase Storage, because a board or a game with your real photos in it is the point. Before anything is saved, our server removes the photo's EXIF metadata (including location) and resizes it.

  • Your own boards (a new Kwest catch, a Themed Hunt round): kept for as long as that stamp or hunt row exists. Only you can see these. Nobody else can, and they never appear on a leaderboard, a feed, or any public page.
  • Private games with friends (Tic Tac Toe with friends, Bingo, and private contests including Hunt and Relay): the photo for each move that counts is kept so it can be shown on the game's board. The players in that game who have Kaptr Plus can see it. Players without Kaptr Plus see only their own photos, which are also kept on their own device. Kaptr deletes these photos 30 days after the game ends.
  • Never kept or shown: Global Tic Tac Toe and every other public surface. Photos there are judged and dropped, and the only copy is on your own device.

Your control: Share my photos in Settings is on by default. Turn it off and Kaptr stops uploading new photos, for your own boards and for private games alike. Turning it off does not remove photos already stored. To have them removed, delete your account (Kaptr deletes every stored photo of yours first, before the rest of your data) or email privacy@kaptr.app.

Your own photos from games are also saved on your device, in the app's storage, so you can see your own board; clearing the app's data removes them. Two more things stay on your device: you can save a Kwest catch to your phone's own gallery (on by default, and you can turn it off in Settings), and sharing a result card turns it into a temporary image handed to your phone's share sheet, only when you tap share. Neither is uploaded to us.

🗂️Information we collect

Account information, from whichever sign-in method you use (Google or Apple):

  • Display name, email address, and profile photo URL

Gameplay data, generated as you use the app:

  • Daily scores, feedback text, and streak counts
  • Per-day score history (used to show your recent performance)
  • Kwest progress: which collection slots you've stamped (species names)
  • Friend connections (via shareable friend codes) and friend activity you choose to share
  • Private contests you create or join, including round scores and leaderboard standing
  • Photos kept as described in "What happens to your photos" above, unless you turn off Share my photos

Achievements, if you use Google Play Games (Android) or Game Center (iOS): when you reach a milestone in Kaptr, such as a streak length or a rank, the app tells your device's Google Play Games or Apple Game Center profile so the achievement appears there. Kaptr sends only which achievement you earned and its progress. We do not store your Play Games or Game Center identity on our servers, and your Kaptr account is separate from that profile.

Purchase information, if you subscribe to Kaptr Plus or buy extra contest credits: your subscription status and purchase history, handled through the Apple App Store or Google Play's own billing systems and our subscription-management provider (RevenueCat). We never see or store your payment card details.

Push notification tokens, so we can deliver the daily riddle reminder and friend-activity alerts you'd expect from the app.

🔧How we use this information

  • To run the core game: show your daily riddle, score your photo, and track your streak
  • To power social features you opt into: friends, invites, and private contests
  • To send notifications you can disable at any time in your device settings
  • To manage Kaptr Plus subscriptions and contest-credit purchases

We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell your personal information to anyone.

🤝Third-party services

Kaptr is built on:

  • Google Firebase: authentication, database, backend functions, hosting, and push notifications
  • Third-party AI vision providers: score your photo against the day's riddle, contest round, or game challenge, and identify what's in your photo for Kwest catches. Each photo is sent only to judge that one photo; Kaptr does not keep the judged copy, and these providers never receive photos from our storage.
  • Google Analytics for Firebase: usage statistics about how the app is used (for example which screens are opened), so we can fix problems and improve the game. The kaptr.app website also uses Google Analytics to count visits. Neither is used for advertising.
  • Sentry: error and crash reports from the app (technical details such as the device model and what went wrong), so we can fix bugs. Crash reports never include your photos.
  • RevenueCat: manages Kaptr Plus subscriptions and contest-credit purchases
  • Google Play Games Services and Apple Game Center: show your Kaptr achievements in Play Games or Game Center. Your achievements are visible according to that service's own settings, and Google or Apple collect the related data under their own privacy policies. You can turn this off by signing out of Play Games or Game Center on your device.

Each of these providers processes data on our behalf and under their own privacy policies in addition to this one. We may change providers over time; any provider we use handles your data only to deliver the service described here.

Where your data is processed. Kaptr is available worldwide and our providers operate servers in several countries, including the United States and Asia. Your data, including photos sent for judging, may be processed in a country other than your own. Where data about people in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland is transferred abroad, we rely on our providers' standard safeguards for international transfers, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.

🔒Data security

Your account data is protected by Firebase security rules restricting access to your own records, and all writes to sensitive fields (scores, streaks, purchases) happen only through server-side functions we control, never directly from the app.

🧒Children's privacy

Kaptr is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

✉️Your choices & contact

You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your account data at any time by contacting us at privacy@kaptr.app. You can also disable push notifications in your device settings at any time.

We may update this policy as the app evolves; the "Effective" date above will always reflect the latest version.
